Driver Charged with Fleeing Scene After Fatally Striking Pedestrian in Aberdeen

Authorities in Monmouth County announced that a Matawan woman has been charged in connection with leaving the scene of an accident that left a pedestrian deceased in Aberdeen last month.AdMonmouth County Prosecutor Raymond S. Santiago stated that Sonia Gomez, 64, was charged with one count of second-degree Leaving the Scene of a Fatal Crash.

Prosecutor Santiago said that on Wednesday, September 4, at approximately 7:24 p.m., members of the Aberdeen Police Department responded to the intersection of Atlantic Avenue and 2nd Street for a report of a pedestrian struck.

Upon arrival, officers discovered a 58-year-old female pedestrian in the roadway, officials say. 

County officials said the pedestrian was transported to Jersey Shore University Medical Center for treatment, where she would later succumb to her injuries on Sunday, September 29.

The pedestrian was identified as Judith Fox-Hernandez of Aberdeen, officials said. 

Aberdeen Police stated that an investigation by members of the Monmouth County Serious Collision Analysis Response Team (SCART), the Monmouth County Prosecutor’s Office – Major Crimes Bureau, and the Aberdeen Police Department determined that Fox-Hernandez was struck by a 2015 Honda Pilot, driven by Gomez.AdGomez did not stop at the time of the crash at the scene, nor did she report the collision to law enforcement, Monmouth County authorities said.
