Newark Public Safety Director Fritz Fragé and Irvington Township Mayor Tony Vauss issued a joint statement following a massive fire that broke out near the Newark-Irvington border on Tuesday afternoon.
At approximately 4:58 p.m., firefighters responded to a call about a fire in a vacant residential building at 71 Montgomery Avenue in Irvington.
Due to the intensity of the blaze, the Irvington Fire Department requested mutual aid from Newark Fire Division.
Accoridng to the statement, a second alarm was sounded at 5:20 p.m., followed by a third alarm at 5:26 p.m., as the fire rapidly spread to four nearby buildings at 65, 67, 73, and 75 Montgomery Street.
The fire, which affected five residential buildings, was brought under control by 6:51 p.m.
One elderly man was injured and taken to University Hospital for treatment. Fortunately, no other injuries were reported.
However, nine families—comprising 26 adults and four children—have been displaced and will be relocated.
New Jersey Senator Renee Burgess, a resident of the neighborhood, was on the scene offering direct support to those affected by the fire, consoling residents, and assisting those who lost everything in the devastating blaze.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
