Newark police are searching for several suspects involved in a robbery at a local gas station early Saturday morning.
According to Newark Public Safety Director Fritz G. Fragé, at approximately 5:56 a.m., a blue Dodge Caravan with New Jersey license plate W25UWS pulled into the Exxon Gas Station located in the 300 block of Springfield Avenue.
The driver requested $5 worth of gas, but after the attendant charged the driver’s credit card, the driver accused the worker of overcharging.
Director Frage said what began as an argument quickly escalated, as four females and another male suspect joined the confrontation.
The group physically assaulted the attendant and stole $100 from him before fleeing the scene in two separate vehicles.
Police have since recovered the blue Dodge Caravan, but the second vehicle remains at large.
It is described as a gold or tan Buick with dealer plates (DWL-38) and an out-of-state inspection sticker.
The Buick has front-end, driver-side damage, and its bumper is notably damaged.
Director Fragé urges anyone with information regarding the Buick or the suspects to contact the Newark Police Division's 24-hour Crime Stopper tip line at 1-877-NWK-TIPS (1-877-695-8477).
