UPDATE: Middletown Man Arrested for Fatal Shooting at Fairfield Hotel

A suspect has been arrested in connection with the deadly shooting at a Fairfield hotel earlier this month.

According to the Essex County Prosecutor's Office, Tyrone Malcolm, 39, of Middletown, NY, was taken into custody following the incident that resulted in the death of Mohammed Sahariar, 28, of Fairfield, and left another man critically injured.

The shooting took place on October 4, 2024, at the Ramada Inn on Two Bridges Road.

Authorities report that Sahariar and his co-worker were on duty when the attack occurred at approximately 12:27 p.m.

Sahariar was pronounced dead at the scene at 1:35 p.m., while the second victim was rushed to a nearby hospital, where he remains in critical condition.

Shooting

Following an investigation conducted by the Essex County Prosecutor’s Homicide Task Force and the Fairfield Police Department, Malcolm was identified as the primary suspect.

He was apprehended at a residence in Middletown, NY, with the assistance of the U.S. Marshal’s Service Fugitive Task Force.

According to the Essex County Prosecutor's Office, Malcolm faces multiple charges, including murder, attempted murder, unlawful possession of a weapon, and possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose.

He is currently being held in New York, awaiting extradition to New Jersey.

Prosecutor Theodore N. Stephens, II, praised the swift actions of the investigative team, saying, “The members of the Homicide Task Force worked non-stop to identify and expeditiously apprehend the offender.” Stephens also expressed gratitude to the New Jersey State Police and the U.S. Marshal’s Service for their support throughout the investigation.
