While the Florida Panhandle braces for the impact of Tropical Storm Helene, which is expected to strengthen into a Category 3 hurricane before making landfall, my friends and family in Newark and the North Jersey region are starting the day with cooler temperatures and cloudy skies.
As of 4:40 a.m., Newark is at a cool 63 degrees, with more cloud cover expected throughout the day, making it feel even cooler.
Some light sprinkles have been reported in Sussex and Warren counties, but the rest of the region remains dry.
According to the National Weather Service and the National Hurricane Center, Tropical Storm Helene is projected to bring powerful winds, flooding, and life-threatening storm surges to the Florida Gulf Coast, prompting thousands to evacuate since Tuesday night.
Although North Jersey is not expected to be directly affected by the storm, there is a slight chance of precipitation as it moves through the middle of the country.
The NWS forecast for Newark includes a 40% chance of showers after 11 a.m., cloudy skies, and a high near 69 degrees.
Residents are encouraged to check in with family and friends in Florida, while locally, the weather should remain relatively calm.
