Suspects Exchange Gunfire, Damaging Cars in Newark University Heights Section

Police are searching for two suspects involved in a Saturday evening exchange of gunfire that left two crime scenes and several cars damaged in Newark’s University Heights neighborhood.SupportThe incident occurred shortly before 6:40 p.m. near the intersection of Norfolk Street and New Street, where residents reported hearing over a dozen shots fired.

Officers from Newark’s West and North Ward precincts were already en route to the scene after a ShotSpotter device detected multiple gunshots in the area.

Reports say upon arrival, police found vehicles struck by bullets in the 30s block of Hartford Street and numerous shell casings scattered near 151 Norfolk Street.

Shooting A preliminary investigation revealed that two male suspects had been exchanging gunfire before fleeing the scene.

While no injuries were reported, the gunfire left residents feeling uneasy, particularly in a community that has faced challenges with open-air drug trafficking. SupportAuthorities checked local hospitals for walk-in victims but found no gunshot victims.

The investigation is ongoing as police work to identify and apprehend the suspects, who remain at large.
