Newark Man Arrested After Homeowner Foils Burglary Attempt in Union Township

A Union Township resident stopped a potential burglary early Wednesday morning after being awakened by a security alarm and discovering intruders attempting to break into his home.

According to police, the incident occurred around 6:20 a.m. near Andrew Street Park.AdResponding officers found a pry bar at the scene and observed two suspects fleeing the home on foot.

During the ensuing chase, Union Police said one of the suspects was picked up by an accomplice in a stolen 2021 BMW X7, taken in an armed burglary in Maplewood on September 17.

Despite an intense pursuit through Irvington and Newark, the vehicle evaded capture.

The second suspect, identified as 18-year-old Mr. Jaquann Scott of Newark, was apprehended with assistance from a Maplewood police officer.

Scott faces charges of attempted burglary and resisting arrest and is being held at the Union County Jail pending a hearing.

Authorities believe the home was specifically targeted due to a high-end car visible in the driveway.

Investigators are actively working to identify the other individuals involved in the attempted break-in.

Maplewood Police are also investigating Scott in connection with other attempted burglaries in their area.AdThe Union Township Police Department urges residents to remain vigilant and report suspicious activity.
