Essex County authorities are investigating a deadly shooting that occurred Wednesday night in Newark.
According to a statement released by Essex County Prosecutor Theodore N. Stephens II, officers were dispatched around 8:45 p.m. to a supermarket in the 300 block of South 7th Street after receiving reports of gunfire.
Upon arrival, Newark police officers discovered 26-year-old Ms. Nakiyyah Blue of Bloomfield unresponsive inside the store, suffering from multiple gunshot wounds.
Despite efforts from first responders, Blue was pronounced dead at the scene at 8:57 p.m.
It is currently unclear why Blue was in the West Ward area at the time of the shooting.
The incident is being investigated by the Essex County Prosecutor’s Homicide Task Force, which is working alongside detectives from the Newark Police Department.
The investigation remains active and ongoing.
Authorities are urging anyone with information to come forward.
