Kearny Man Injured in Paterson Shooting, Suspect Arrested

Authorities have arrested a Paterson man in connection with a shooting that left a Kearny resident injured in June. 

According to the Passaic County Prosecutor’s Office, 22-year-old Rafael A. Cabrera Perea was taken into custody on September 9, 2024, for his alleged involvement in the June 17, 2024, shooting near Prospect Street and Ellison Street in Paterson.AdThe incident occurred at approximately 2:41 a.m. on June 17, when Paterson police responded to reports of gunfire.

Shortly after, officers were informed that a 26-year-old man from Kearny had arrived at St. Joseph’s University Medical Center with non-fatal gunshot wounds, having been transported there by a private vehicle.

Investigators were able to identify Cabrera Perea as the suspected shooter.

He was arrested without incident on September 9 around 1:47 a.m. in the area of 21st Avenue and Summer Street in Paterson. The case remains under investigation.

AdProsecutor Camelia M. Valdes stated that Cabrera Perea has been charged with first-degree attempted murder, second-degree unlawful possession of a weapon, and second-degree possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose.
