Elizabeth Police are investigating a tragic crash that claimed the life of a bicyclist on Sunday night on a busy roadway in the city.
According to a statement released by Spokeswoman Ruby Contreras, emergency responders were dispatched to the 800 block of Route 1&9 shortly before 10:30 p.m. to investigate a reported crash.
Upon arrival, police and EMS personnel found a 35-year-old man who had sustained severe injuries.
The preliminary investigation revealed that the man was crossing North Avenue and Spring Street on his bicycle when a 20-year-old driver ran through a red light, resulting in the decapitation of the bicyclist.
Authorities are continuing their investigation into the incident. Notification of the next of kin has not yet been made, as officials are still searching for the family.
