UPDATE: Man Accused of Shooting His Cousin Dead in Newark

Authorities in Essex County are diligently investigating the motive behind a brutal shooting that claimed the life of a woman in Newark on Sunday night.

In an intense investigation, detectives from the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office arrested 28-year-old Mr. Tyheed Harris for allegedly gunning down his first cousin, 31-year-old Ms. Brielle Alston, before fleeing the scene.

The Essex County Prosecutor’s Office reported that the violent encounter occurred around 11:23 p.m. at the intersection of 4th Avenue and North 12th Street. Newark Police Department officers responding to a report of a woman shot found Alston unconscious and unresponsive, suffering from gunshot wounds.

Alston was rushed to University Hospital, where she was pronounced dead at 1:20 a.m., according to county officials. 

The reasons behind Harris allegedly firing the weapon remain unclear. 

Sources speculated that Harris might have been under the influence of an unknown drug at the time, though county officials have not confirmed this assertion.

Harris was apprehended on Wednesday morning by detectives after a brief search. Support He has been charged with murder and other related offenses, as confirmed by county records.

Funeral services for Alston are scheduled for Monday at Cotton’s Funeral Home in Newark at 11 a.m.

The Prosecutor’s Homicide Task Force, including detectives from the Newark Police Department, continues to actively investigate the incident.
