Young Child Found Wandering Newark Streets; Police, Firefighters Credited for Quick Action

Newark New Jersey

An investigation is underway for a child wandering on a West Ward Street early this morning.

A passerby reportedly driving to work spotted the 3-year-old boy walking the streets at around 10:30 a.m. The good samaritan reportedly picked the child up and brought him to the fire house located at Sanford Ave. and South Orange Ave. where firefighters on duty immediately began to entertain the boy with cartoons, toys, and food.

Fire officials contacted police immediately. A West Ward Community activist who showed up at the firehouse  searched as a many as seven day care centers in the area in effort to check for children that may have been misplaced.

Swift police response to the scene had one of the community officers recognize the boy from patrolling the neighborhoods around the firehouse (community policing). The officer reportedly knew exactly where the child lived and his guardian.

The child was taken to University Hospital for a check-up then released to his mother according to reports. It is not immediately clear how the child left the care of a guardian at this time.

This is developing.
