A Northampton County, Pennsylvania, woman was arrested at Newark Liberty International Airport after Transportation Security Administration (TSA) officers discovered a loaded .22 caliber handgun in her purse.
The arrest occurred on Tuesday, June 25, highlighting the challenges and security risks as the TSA prepares for a busy Fourth of July holiday to ensure safe flying across the country.
The handgun, which was small enough to fit inside the woman’s purse, went undetected until it reached the X-ray machine at a security checkpoint.
The woman claimed that she rarely used the purse and had intended to hand it off to her husband before she and her daughter arrived at the airport for their flight but forgot to do so.
Upon detecting the firearm, TSA officers immediately alerted the Port Authority Police, who arrived at the Terminal B checkpoint to arrest the Hellertown, Pennsylvania resident.
The woman’s daughter was also escorted to the police station following the incident.
In addition to facing potential criminal charges, TSA official said the woman is subjected to a stiff federal financial civil penalty.
The TSA can impose penalties of up to $15,000 for bringing a weapon to a security checkpoint.
Officials said this enforcement measure applies regardless of whether the individual possesses a concealed carry permit, as such permits do not authorize the carrying of firearms onto airplanes.
The TSA continues to enforce strict security measures at checkpoints, especially ahead of expected increases in travel around national holidays.
This incident serves as a critical reminder for all travelers to thoroughly check their belongings for prohibited items before heading to the airport.
