Male Shot Dead on Outdoor Basketball Court in Newark's Central Ward

The Essex County Prosecutor's Office has taken charge of the investigation following a deadly shooting that occurred in Newark on Thursday night.AdAt around 9 p.m., Newark Police were alerted to gunfire through a ShotSpotter notification near the intersection of Sussex Avenue and Duryea Street.

Responding officers discovered a male victim with bullet wounds on an outdoor basketball court adjacent to the Essex County Youth House.

Thomas Fennelly, Chief Assistant Prosecutor, stated that the male was found unconscious and unresponsive and was pronounced dead at the scene.AdPolice secured the area and collected multiple shell casings from the basketball court.

The incident did not affect the nearby Newark Light Rail Orange Street station. The suspect has fled the scene and is currently at large.
