The Honorable Irvington Township Mayor Tony Vauss, in partnership with the Irvington Municipal Council, led a successful 2nd annual Opioid Awareness Concert on June 8, 2024.
This event, part of a broader initiative to combat the opioid crisis, drew over 3,500 attendees from Irvington and nearby communities, highlighting the urgent need for increased opioid misuse and abuse awareness.
Nationwide, CDC preliminary numbers from the opioid epidemic have escalated dramatically, with overdose death rates significantly rising from 7.3 per 100,000 people in 2011 to 24.7 in 2021.
In response, Mayor Vauss and the Irvington Municipal Council launched the Opioid Awareness Concert as a key component of their strategy to educate the public on the dangers of opioids and promote safe practices.
According to a statement released by Irvington Township officials, the concert provided an educational and empowering experience, featuring musical performances intertwined with messages on prevention, treatment, and recovery from opioid addiction.
Notable artists such as Musiq Soulchild, Donell Jones, and Q Parker shared personal stories, enhancing the impact of the event.
Mayor Vauss stressed the importance of proactive measures against opioid addiction, including consulting with healthcare providers about non-opioid pain management alternatives and adhering strictly to prescription guidelines.
He also highlighted the importance of not mixing opioids with other substances to avoid the increased risk of adverse effects and overdose.
Mayor Vauss outlined the following shared several key recommendations:
1. Consult with your doctor: When prescribed a prescription opioid, discuss the pros and cons and inquire about alternative non-opioid options.
2. Follow dosage instructions: Take prescription opioids strictly as directed on the label. If experiencing chronic pain, explore safer pain management options, such as exercise, in consultation with your doctor.
3. Open communication with your doctor: If you notice any unusual side effects or find it challenging to adhere to the prescribed instructions, promptly discuss these concerns with your healthcare provider.
4. Avoid mixing opioids with other substances: Refrain from combining opioid medication with alcohol or other drugs, as this can significantly increase the risk of adverse effects and overdose.
Echoing Mayor Vauss's commitment, the Irvington Municipal Council advocated for responsible medication practices among residents.
They encouraged proper disposal of unused medications and informed the community about safe locations for opioid treatment and needle exchange programs across New Jersey.
