Detectives have arrested and charged a New York man for shooting another driver last month in Voorhees Township, announced Camden County Prosecutor Grace C. MacAulay and Voorhees Township Police Chief Louis Bordi.
Hieu Tran, 27, of Yonkers, NY, who is employed as an officer with the New York City Police Department (NYPD), was charged on Thursday with first-degree attempted murder for the shooting of a 30-year-old Voorhees Township man.
Tran was also charged with second-degree aggravated assault and second-degree possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose.
Camden County officials said that on Friday, May 17, at approximately 11:13 p.m., officers from the Voorhees Township Police Department responded to a multi-vehicle crash at the intersection of Route 73 and Cooper Road.
Upon arrival, officers observed one of the drivers suffering from a gunshot wound. The victim was transported by ambulance to Cooper University Hospital, where he remains in treatment.
During the investigation, detectives utilized surveillance video, cell phone records, and ballistics evidence to identify Tran as the individual responsible for shooting the victim during an apparent road rage incident.
Ballistic evidence collected from the scene was ultimately linked to Tran’s department-issued firearm.
Tran was taken into custody on Thursday at the New York City Police Department. He is being held in New York pending extradition to New Jersey.
The Camden County Prosecutor’s Office and Voorhees Township Police Department were assisted by the New York City Police Department Internal Affairs Bureau, New York County District Attorney’s Office Police Accountability Unit, and New Jersey State Police Ballistics Unit.
This investigation is active and ongoing.
