In a violent shooting incident last night, gunfire erupted on the border of West and Central Ward in Newark, resulting in one fatality and another victim wounded.The shooting occurred around 9:35 p.m. near the intersection of South Orange Avenue and Fairmount Avenue, according to the Essex County Prosecutor's Office, which is now leading the investigation.
Authorities arrived at the scene shortly after the incident to find signs of the shooting, promptly cordoning off the area to begin their investigation.
Witnesses reported that a gunman opened fire multiple times toward the victims.
Both victims were rushed to the nearby University Hospital, where one of them succumbed to their injuries.
The motive behind the shooting remains unclear and is currently under investigation. The suspect responsible for this violent act fled the scene and remains at large.
The Essex County Prosecutor's Office urges anyone with information to come forward to assist with the ongoing investigation.
