Police in Newark have taken a man into custody following an attack on an officer in the downtown area on Monday afternoon.
The encounter occurred near the GameStop store at Broad and Market Streets shortly before 1 p.m.
Officials have not disclosed what prompted the attack by the emotionally distressed Hispanic man, who began striking the officer while shoppers watched in amazement.
The suspect was subdued by several officers without further incident.
Fortunately, the officer did not suffer serious injuries. EMS arrived at the scene to evaluate both the officer and the suspect.
The incident is currently under investigation by Newark Police.
