Mayor's Crime Initiative Credited for Major Crackdown on Drug and Weapons Operation in Irvington Township

In a late-night operation on Friday, Irvington Township Police successfully apprehended a man allegedly at the center of a substantial drug distribution network.VaccineRLS Media learned that the suspect, identified as 37-year-old Mr. Lamont C. Purnell, was arrested following a targeted raid on a building located on Springfield Avenue, which investigators had been surveilling for some time.

Police Director Tracy Bowers stated that the raid uncovered a significant quantity of drugs and a cache of weapons.

The building is suspected to have been used as a "drug mill distribution center," a major hub for illegal activities in the community.

This operation is part of an ongoing effort by Mayor Tony Vauss and the township to eliminate the presence of unlawful drugs and weapons in the area.

"The Irvington Township Police Department will continue to work diligently to arrest individuals who violate the law and disrupt the fabric of our communities,"  -Director Tracy Bowers

Purnell faces multiple charges, including operating a CDS (controlled dangerous substance) production facility, intent to distribute paraphernalia, certain persons not to possess weapons, possession of heroin and cocaine, and possessing firearms while committing a CDS/bias crime.

He is currently being held at Essex County Jail pending a court hearing.

This crackdown reflects the township's commitment to improving safety and security for all residents by targeting the roots of drug and weapon-related crimes.

Crime in Irvington is at an all-time low within the last five years.
