In an advisory released this morning, The New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) officials announced significant lane closures on I-80 in both directions due to a major crash in Hackensack, Bergen County.Motorists are urged to avoid the area and seek alternate routes.
Accoridng to the statement, the incident has led to the closure of I-80 eastbound and westbound express lanes and I-80 westbound local lanes between the New Jersey Turnpike and the Garden State Parkway.
The crash occurred between the Hackensack River and Exit 66/Hudson St/Hackensack/Little Ferry.
While I-80 eastbound local lanes remain open, the ramps from the New Jersey Turnpike to I-80 westbound are closed.NJDOT officials said crews are working diligently to reopen lanes as soon as the accident cleanup and crash investigation allows.
The crash occurred at approximately midnight. A tractor-trailer traveling eastbound on I-80 crashed through the concrete median separating the eastbound and westbound traffic lanes, striking a box truck and causing a fire.
All lanes on I-80 eastbound and westbound express and local were initially closed.
However, I-80 eastbound local lanes have since reopened, and one lane on I-80 westbound local lanes is expected to open soon.
Motorists are advised to avoid the affected area and seek alternate routes, such as Route 46.Congestion and delays are expected to persist throughout the day as crews complete the crash investigation and repair the damage to the concrete median.
The NJDOT said they appreciate the public's patience and cooperation during this challenging situation and is committed to restoring normal traffic flow as quickly as possible.
