Earlier today, police in Elizabeth launched a search for a suspect who shot his girlfriend, sparking a significant law enforcement response, including SWAT teams.
The incident began shortly before 1:15 p.m. at an address in the 200 block of 3rd Street.
Preliminary information indicated that police arrived on the scene after receiving reports of shots fired.
Upon arrival, officers found a woman with a non-fatal gunshot wound to her leg. She was rushed to University Hospital in Newark, where she is reportedly in stable condition.
Believing the suspect had fled into his home, police summoned a massive presence, including drones, in an attempt to coax the suspect out.
After several hours, police discovered that the suspect was never in the house.
The scene was then cleared and police continued their investigation.
A weapon was recovered from one of the homes searched, but it is unclear if it belonged to the suspect.
No other injuries were reported. The search for the suspect continues.
