A police officer sustained non-life-threatening injuries late Thursday night while pursuing a suspect involved in a shooting in Newark's West Ward.Initial reports indicated that the incident developed around 11 p.m. after a ShotSpotter device detected gunfire at 681 South 20th Street.
Upon arrival, officers observed a male suspect, believed to be the shooter, fleeing the neighborhood.
He was last seen wearing a black hoodie and blue jeans. As some officers cordoned off the area after discovering shell casings, others engaged in a chase to apprehend the fleeing suspect.
Fortunately, no bystanders were injured during the shooting.Reports say the injured officer, who was hurt during the pursuit and not from the shooting, is expected to make a full recovery.
The search for the suspect continues, and the investigation remains at large.
