On May 4th, a distressing incident took place at the St. Clair Avenue beachfront when a 23-year-old man from Belleville drowned despite rapid response efforts from multiple agencies, including the Spring Lake Police Department.According to a statement released by Spring Lake Police, at approximately 2:05 PM, officers were dispatched to the scene following reports of a swimmer in distress.
The Spring Lake Police Department, assisted by neighboring forces from Spring Lake Heights, Belmar, and Sea Girt, as well as the Spring Lake First Aid Squad, Spring Lake Fire Department, and the SMART Team—which comprises off-duty lifeguards—quickly coordinated their response.
The first officers on the scene discovered the victim floating face down in the surf.
They immediately pulled him from the water to initiate critical life-saving measures.
Despite the best efforts of the responders, the victim was treated on-site by EMTs and paramedics but was pronounced dead after being transported to Jersey Shore University Medical Center.
The identity of the young man is currently withheld, pending notification of his family.
The Spring Lake Police Department has reiterated the dangers of swimming in unguarded waters, especially as lifeguards are not yet on duty for the season.
They warn the public about the perennial risks of rip currents and rapidly changing conditions, urging beachgoers to wait until lifeguard protections are in place.
