East Orange Unveils Exciting First-Ever Garden State Art Weekend

East Orange bursts into vibrant colors and sounds this weekend as the city hosts its inaugural Garden State Art Weekend (GSAW).NinosWith an opening ceremony on April 19 that drew a diverse array of art enthusiasts, East Orange has set the stage for a celebration of arts and culture that promises to be a memorable experience for residents and visitors. 

Held at the historic Manufacturers Village at 356 Glenwood Avenue, East Orange officials said the event had opened its doors to the public for a two-day art extravaganza that began yesterday and will conclude Sunday. 

Over 60 studios within the venue will welcome visitors from noon to 6 PM each day, showcasing a broad picture of artistic expression that highlights the depth and diversity of New Jersey's art scene.

These studios join more than 115 other renowned institutions and galleries participating statewide.

The city’s Economic Development Specialist, Mark Cheatam, was the Project Coordinator for the East Orange event. 

Mayor Ted R. Green and the East Orange City Council championed the opening night, which featured entertainment from the YaniKeKe Band and DJ Fauzi, along with delectable offerings from Butler Catering and Montclair Brewery.

The event was a celebration of art and a platform for community health, launching the city's poignant public health campaign titled "Art Builds Community.

Opioids Destroy It." This initiative aims to combat opioid abuse, with staff distributing Narcan kits and vital information on the topic.

Mayor Green expressed his enthusiasm for the event, noting, "East Orange is a community deeply woven with art and cultural expression.

This weekend is a testament to our vibrant local arts scene, and we are proud to showcase our talented artists and their works."

The brainchild behind this cultural fiesta is Christine Romanell, a local artist whose vision was inspired by the success of New York's Upstate Art Weekend.

Manufacturers Village, now bustling with artistic activity, serves as the central hub for the event, inviting art lovers to explore and engage with the works of celebrated artists and hidden alike.

Visitors can also explore a unique gallery dedicated to East Orange artists, curated by local art advocates Gwendolyn Jackson and the Pink Dragon Artist Syndicate, LLC.

This space features compelling works from nationally and globally recognized artists, truly encapsulating the community's artistic spirituality.
