A shocking incident of violence on a law enforcement officer in Orange early Saturday morning has landed a man in jail facing aggravated assault charges.
Authorities in Essex County have arrested a man following the brutal attack on an Orange Police Officer, leaving him with severe but non-life threatening injuries.
The attack occurred around 3 a.m. at an Ogden Street address.
The ordeal began when officers were dispatched to the scene after reports emerged of a domestic violence incident.
Upon arrival, the responding officer was violently confronted by Mr. Mark McCargo, who has ties to Newark, Irvington Township, and East Orange.
RLS Media learned that the situation quickly deteriorated when McCargo, identified as the boyfriend of the caller, became enraged and assaulted the officer with a blunt-force object, believed to be a bat. The attack intensified as McCargo struck the officer multiple times with the object, before reportedly running him over with a vehicle.
The unnamed officer suffered significant injuries in the attack, including facial and head fractures, a broken arm, and a broken leg.
He was urgently transported to University Hospital, where he underwent surgery. Despite the severity of his injuries, the officer is in serious condition but is expected to make a recovery.
McCargo was taken into custody shortly after the attack and now faces several charges, including aggravated assault on a police officer.
It has been confirmed that the officer did not discharge his service weapon during the confrontation.
This incident has left the community in shock, and further details are awaited as the investigation continues.
