On the 26th day of RLS Media's 29-day commemoration celebrating black figures in New Jersey, we shine a spotlight on the illustrious career of Newark's own Ms. Vanessa Watson.A towering figure in New Jersey basketball, Watson's journey is one of resilience, achievement, and inspiration. She’s indeed my role model.
A graduate of Virginia State, Watson's basketball prowess was evident early on as she led her team to victory in the 1980 CIAA Tournament Championship.
However, it was her 31-year tenure at Malcolm X Shabazz High School in Newark that solidified her legacy.
With over 700 wins, 10 state championships, and 6 Tournament of Champions titles, Watson's coaching career is unparalleled in the state's history.
Vanessa’s Hall of Fame coaching career made her one of the most successful and accomplished coaches in the history of women’s basketball in the state of New Jersey on the high school level.
Beyond the high school level, Watson's influence extended to the national stage. From coaching prestigious All-Star games to leading USA Basketball teams, she left an indelible mark on the sport.
Watson has also manned the sidelines for numerous All-Star games, headlined by being selected for the 2015 Jordan Brand Classic All-American East squad. She participated with Nike during its Skills Academy and as a coach for its WBCA All-American Team.
Some of Watson's notable accolades include being honored as the New Jersey State Coach of the Year in 2003, receiving three Tri-State Coach of the Year awards in 2003, 2004, and 2013, being recognized as the Star-Ledger Coach of the Year in 2004, being named the Northeast Regional Coach of the Year in the same year, and earning District Coach of the Year honors in 2006.
The depth of her commitment to both the City of Newark and her players, as demonstrated by their achievements both on and off the court, is a testament to her character and unwavering pursuit of excellence.
As we honor Ms. Vanessa Watson today, we celebrate not only her achievements but also her dedication to the game and to shaping the lives of countless young athletes.
Her impact reverberates far beyond the basketball court, leaving a legacy of leadership, mentorship, and inspiration for generations to come.
