In RLS Media's 25th day of commemorating black individuals who've left a lasting impact on New Jersey, we celebrate the indomitable spirit of Craig "Ironhead" Heyward, whose resilience and strength inspired many.
Heyward's journey was marked by challenges, beginning in his childhood when he faced adversity at the Boys & Girls Club in Passaic.
Despite enduring a traumatic incident where a fellow child broke a pool cue over his head, Heyward remained steadfast and barely flinched.
His grandmother bestowed upon him the nickname "Ironhead," a testament to his unyielding determination.
On the football field, Heyward's tenacity and talent shone brightly. Excelling at Passaic High School, he later joined the University of Pittsburgh team, where his remarkable skills earned him national recognition.
In the 1988 NFL Draft, Heyward was selected by the New Orleans Saints in the first round, launching a prosperous professional career.
Heyward's legacy extends beyond his athletic achievements.
Despite battling health challenges, including cancer and a stroke, he never lost his fighting spirit.
His courage and resilience continue to inspire generations, reminding us that even in the face of adversity, the human spirit can persevere.
