Newark Schools Superintendent Roger Leon announced the cancellation of all Saturday school activities in Newark due to the inclement weather conditions brought on by the Albert Clipper storm.
The storm, which hit Newark and the Northern New Jersey area this Saturday morning, left a snowfall of 2-5 inches in its wake.
Although it is expected to move out of the area by 10 a.m., the aftermath has prompted cautionary measures.
Superintendent Leon advised the community to stay indoors, keep warm, and take advantage of the extended weekend, as schools will also be closed on Monday in observance of President's Day.
In line with the weather conditions, Newark Public Safety Director Fritz G. Fragé issued a reminder for drivers to heed the "No Parking on Snow Covered Roadways" signs to facilitate snow removal efforts.
The National Weather Service reported that light snow began falling around 11 p.m. Friday, with total accumulations reaching 2 to 4 inches by dawn.
Additional light snowfall, amounting to about an inch, is expected to continue until 1 p.m. Saturday.
Newark officials said residents are reminded that it is illegal to dispose of snow in the streets.
The Department of Public Safety is actively coordinating responses to weather-related incidents, including burglar alarms and flooding conditions, utilizing a combined force of Police, Fire, and Office of Emergency Management personnel.
The public is also advised to secure outdoor furniture and materials and to use flashlights instead of candles in the event of a power outage to ensure fire safety during this weather event.
