Early this morning, Union County authorities were alerted to a train derailment in Linden, sparking immediate response from police and fire departments.
The incident occurred just after 7 a.m. near Tremley Point Road, where an industrial tank railcar was found halted across the Grasselli access road following a derailment on the Conrail Garden State Secondary line.
Initial investigations reveal that a lengthy train, comprising over 90 tank railcars, experienced a derailment on the Tremley Point Siding extension.
Among the derailed vehicles, police said eight railcars went off the tracks, with two tipping over onto their sides.
Despite the potential for hazard, officials confirmed that none of the tanks were breached, and thankfully, no spillage has occurred.
Police said there have been no injuries reported in connection with the derailment.
The swift action and response by Linden's emergency services have been pivotal in managing the situation and ensuring public safety.
While the access road to Grasselli has since been reopened to traffic, first responders are anticipated to remain at the scene for an extended period.
The focus now shifts to the removal of the derailed railcars and a thorough investigation into the cause of the accident.
