The Hudson County Regional Collision Investigation Unit has arrested a 71-year-old Jersey City resident in connection with a fatal hit-and-run collision that occurred last year.Hudson County Prosecutor Esther Suarez announced the arrest on Friday, January 26, 2024.
The suspect, Mohammad Ali of Jersey City, faces serious charges including Knowingly Leaving the Scene of a Motor Vehicle Collision Resulting in Death, a second-degree crime, and Endangering an Injured Victim, a third-degree crime.
These charges follow the tragic incident that took place on October 20, 2023.
Ali was apprehended at the Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office in Secaucus and subsequently released, with his initial court appearance scheduled for February 13, 2024.
The incident in question occurred on the evening of October 20, 2023, around 6:45 p.m., when the Jersey City Police Department received reports of a pedestrian being struck in the vicinity of Fairview Avenue and Monticello Avenue.
Officers responding to the scene found the victim, 85-year-old Mumtaz Chaudhry, also from Jersey City, near Fairmount Avenue and Summit Avenue. Chaudhry was pronounced dead at the scene.
It is important to note that the charges against Ali are merely accusations at this stage, and he is presumed innocent until proven guilty.
The case has garnered significant attention, highlighting the ongoing concerns over pedestrian safety and hit-and-run incidents around the state.
