The Essex County Prosecutor's Office (ECPO) has announced a new initiative, the "Sanctuary" program, aimed at equipping Essex County residents with the skills needed to support victims of domestic violence and related crimes.
According to ECPO Spokesman Mr. Robert Florida, the program is an extensive 100-hour course offering specialized training in crisis intervention and outreach services.
Sanctuary is structured into two parts: basic and advanced, ensuring a comprehensive learning experience.
Participants will delve into a wide array of topics, ranging from the nature of catastrophe and the spiritual dimension of trauma to advanced topics like emerging trends in crime-victim advocacy and the politics of power in intimate relationships.
Upon completing the program, trained volunteers from diverse backgrounds, including religious organizations, police departments, and social services, will be well-equipped to provide culturally sensitive support to victims and their families swiftly, within a 24-72 hour timeframe.
The course not only covers various aspects of victim support but also addresses the volunteers' well-being, with topics like vicarious trauma, spirituality, and self-care included in the advanced section.
