Newark Man Admits to Montclair Carjacking; Faces Severe Penalties

In a Wednesday courtroom proceeding, Andy Cook, 24, of Newark, conceded to charges of carjacking and conspiracy in a case presided over by Judge Julien X. Neals.AdU.S. Attorney Philip R. Sellinger made the announcement, shedding light on a crime that rattled the Montclair community.

Court documents reveal that on December 6, 2021, Cook, in collusion with an unnamed accomplice, orchestrated a brazen carjacking.

The victim, seated in her vehicle parked on her driveway, became the target when the accomplice menacingly brandished a firearm and demanded she abandon her car and belongings.

Seizing the moment, Cook commandeered the vehicle, leading to a frantic call for help from the victim.

 

Law enforcement's prompt response led to the swift location of the stolen car. However, in a desperate bid to evade capture, Cook abandoned the vehicle in Newark and attempted an escape on foot, only to be apprehended shortly after.AdThe severity of the charges against Cook is palpable. The carjacking offense alone might result in up to 15 years of imprisonment and a fine reaching $250,000.

Additionally, the conspiracy charge, linked to the use of a firearm during the violent act, escalates the potential punishment to 20 years in prison and a similar $250,000 fine.

The legal proceedings are poised to culminate on May 30, 2024, when Cook is scheduled for sentencing, marking the end of a case that has underscored the harsh realities of violent crime and its repercussions.
