Superintendent Roger Leon of the Newark Public Schools announced this evening at 8:30 p.m. that all schools in the district will have a delayed opening on Tuesday due to inclement weather conditions.
Newark now joins over two dozen other schools in New Jersey in adjusting their schedules in response to the weather forecast.
The National Weather Service has issued a weather prediction indicating snowfall starting mainly after 9 p.m. tonight, with temperatures dropping to around 27 degrees.
Initially, light and variable winds are expected to shift to the northeast, reaching speeds of 5 to 7 mph after midnight.
The chance of precipitation is high, at 80%, with total nighttime snow accumulation predicted to be between 2 and 4 inches.
For Tuesday, the forecast includes a mix of rain, snow, and freezing rain before noon, followed by likely rain and snow between noon and 4 p.m.
The high for the day is anticipated to be near 34 degrees, with wind chill values hovering between 20 and 25 degrees.
In light of these conditions, Newark Public Schools have decided to open on a delayed schedule at 10 a.m. on Tuesday.
This decision aims to ensure the safety of students and staff by allowing extra time for travel in potentially hazardous conditions.
Parents, guardians, and staff are advised to stay informed of any further updates from the district and to plan their morning schedules accordingly.
The school district's priority remains the safety of its students and staff, and this delay is a precautionary measure to ensure that everyone arrives safely at their destinations.
The community is urged to exercise caution while traveling and to stay tuned to local weather updates as the situation develops.
