The Honorable Mayor Tony Vauss, together with the Irvington Township Municipal Council and Public Safety Director Tracy Bowers, have declared their intention to hire Special Law Enforcement Officers (SLEO) Class III, specifically targeting retired police officers and state troopers.
This recruitment is part of a strategic move to bolster security in public schools within the township.
Candidates for the SLEO Class III positions are expected to meet stringent requirements.
These include being a retired law enforcement officer under the age of 65 who has separated from prior service in good standing within the last three years.
Applicants must not have retired due to injury or incapacity.
Moreover, they must possess either a New Jersey Police Training Commission Basic Police Officer Certification or a New Jersey State Police Academy Certification.
The selection process will include a comprehensive background investigation encompassing psychological testing, drug screening, and a medical evaluation.
Applicants must also submit a letter of good standing from their previous chief of police or commanding officer detailing their employment history, type of retirement, and their standing upon retirement.
Prospective SLEO Class III officers must be New Jersey residents with a valid driver's license and a high school diploma (or equivalent). They should demonstrate proficiency in English and be of sound moral character, with no convictions for offenses involving dishonesty.
Physical fitness is also a prerequisite determined by Police Training Commission guidelines.
These appointees will undergo specialized training and obtain certification by the Police Training Commission in the Department of Law and Public Safety as required by NJSA 40A:14-146.10 et seq.
They will be trained for the Safe Schools Resource Officer role and will be armed, subject to legal authorization for firearm possession.
It's important to note that these positions are part-time, aligning with the school calendar, and not exceeding 40 hours per week.
Additionally, based on this appointment, appointees will not be eligible for health care benefits or enrollment in any State-administered retirement system.
