In a heart-wrenching incident that has shaken the Newark East Ward community, the Essex County Prosecutor's Office is investigating the fatal shooting of Mr. Jose F. Gaona, a 67-year-old livery cab driver who was only months away from retiring.Gaona, a respected and adored member of his family and community, tragically lost his life in what is believed to be a robbery gone wrong.
According to county officials, at 7:01 a.m. today, Newark Police were called to the 100 block of Malvern Street.
There, they found Gaona suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. Despite their efforts, Gaona was pronounced dead at the scene at 7:25 a.m.
He was reportedly walking to his cab, operated by his family-owned company, Go Car Service, when he was attacked and then mercilessly gunned down.
Gaona's devastated wife, family, and coworkers arrived at the scene. Overwhelmed with grief, they wept uncontrollably upon witnessing the crime scene and detectives meticulously gathering evidence.
The family remained at the scene until its conclusion, watching solemnly as police eventually towed Gaona's vehicle away.
Over two dozen people waited out in the cold on the last day of the year, overcome with grief at the loss of a man who epitomized hard work and dedication.
The Ironbound community, where Gaona was a familiar and friendly face, is in mourning.
Described as an "excellent husband, grandfather, father, and simply a perfect community man" by friends, his death leaves a void in the hearts of many.
As the Essex County Prosecutor's Office Homicide/Major Crimes Task Force leads the investigation, no arrests have been made yet.
While preparing for a sorrowful farewell, the family calls for justice for this community icon.
Authorities urge anyone with information to come forward, as every tip could be crucial in solving this devastating crime.
