Scotch Plains Man Convicted of Aggravated Assault After Shooting Teen Outside His Newark Business

Newark New Jersey

A Scotch Plains man was convicted today of a aggravated assault charge after shooting a 17-year-old teen outside his Newark business in 2013.

Clement Romans, 61, of Scotch Plains, shot Daquan Jones allegedly in 'self-defense' on June 29, 2013, outside his bakery - Golden Krust Caribbean Bakery and Grill - in the area of Lyons Avenue.

Romans claims he fired his weapon because the group of teens outside the business made him feel that his life was at risk, according to report.

However, Essex County Assistant Prosecutor Carlo Fioranelli stated that       Roman actions does not justify the use of deadly force, since no one else at the scene was armed.

Today, a jury acquitted Romans of a second-degree aggravated assault charge, but he was found guilty of third-degree aggravated assault charge.

Romans was convicted of weapons offenses and a tampering with evidence charge, as a result of allegedly hiding the gun from police after the shooting.

Roman is scheduled for sentencing on June 22 before Superior Court Judge Alfonse Cifelli.

Roman was permitted to remain released on bail.
