Newark Police officials are investigating a shooting that erupted near a firehouse Sunday night.
The startling incident occurred in Newark's West Ward on Sunday night when gunfire sounded off in the Fairmount section of the city.
It happened around 10 p.m. on the South 9th Street side of The Reservoir Apartments, a housing project in the area.
Inside the nearby firehouse, firefighters heard the sound of gunshots, and police were alerted to the shooting through a ShotSpotter device that was activated in the vicinity.
Officers responded to the scene, where they discovered a blood trail near the firehouse leading to The Reservoir Apartments.
This discovery prompted officials to put area hospitals on high alert, anticipating possible walk-in gunshot victims.
Despite thorough searches in the area and The Reservoir Housing complex, no victims were found.
It's worth noting that the neighborhood surrounding the housing complex, especially the vicinity of South Orange Avenue and South 9th Street, has unfortunately gained notoriety as a hotspot for gun violence.
No arrests have been reported, and investigations into the incident are ongoing.
