A Union County jury has delivered a guilty verdict in a heart-wrenching case, with Malika Jones, 26, of Rahway, convicted for the fatal stabbing of her mother in 2020, as announced by Union County Prosecutor William A. Daniel and Rahway Police Director Nicholas Breiner on Monday.
Following a rigorous three-week trial presided over by Union County Superior Court Judge Thomas Isenhour, the jury reached its verdict on Friday, finding Malika Jones guilty of Aggravated Manslaughter.
The jury deliberated for a day and a half before delivering its decision.
The tragic incident unfolded shortly after 3 p.m. on Sunday, February 16, 2020, when officers from the Rahway Police Department responded to a residence on the 100 block of East Albert Street.
Union County Assistant Prosecutor Robert Grady, who handled the case, recounted that upon their arrival, officers discovered the lifeless body of the victim, Inell Jones, 58, who was pronounced dead at the scene.
Without delay, Jones was taken into custody by law enforcement.
A collaborative effort between the Union County Prosecutor’s Office Homicide Task Force, Rahway Police Department, and the Union County Sheriff’s Crime Scene Unit swiftly led to the filing of charges against Malika Jones within hours of law enforcement becoming aware of the incident.
Sentencing for this sad case has been scheduled for January 26, 2024, before Judge Thomas Isenhour.
