Newark Mayor Ras J. Baraka and Public Safety Director Fritz G. Fragé announced with deepest regret the passing of Newark Police Sergeant Darryl A. Cheeks, 47, who passed away suddenly on Thursday, November 2, 2023.
"Sergeant Cheeks was with me since my earliest days in office, and I am deeply saddened by his sudden loss," said Mayor Baraka.
"I send my heartfelt condolences to his beloved wife and children and all his loved ones. I extend my sympathy to all his colleagues who know firsthand his unflinching dedication to safeguarding the people of Newark for the past 17 years."
"Sergeant Cheeks' passing is a reminder of the fragility of life itself and the importance of living each moment with meaning and mission. He has inspired all of us to put our focus on each other and enrich the lives of those around us."
"The passing of Sergeant Cheeks is reverberating profoundly throughout the entire Newark Police Division and Department of Public Safety," Director Fragé said.
"Not only was he a highly skilled police supervisor, but a devoted public servant and friend to all who served alongside him. We offer our most fervent prayers of comfort and peace to his family."
Sergeant Darryl Cheeks began his career with the Newark Police Division in March 2006, officials said.
Officials stated he served in numerous law enforcement units, including the 2nd Precinct in the North Ward, the 3rd Precinct in the East Ward, the 5th Precinct in the South Ward, the Fugitive Unit, the Robbery Unit, Executive Protection, Medical Services, and most recently, the Licensing Unit.
