Union County authorities are currently investigating a tragic incident that occurred in the early hours of today, resulting in the fatal injury of a pedestrian.
City officials reported that the incident unfolded at approximately 3:57 a.m. when police received distressing calls regarding a man seated in the roadway on Newark Avenue.
Moments later, another call was made to the police, informing them that the man had been struck by a passing vehicle.
The nature of the incident is still under investigation, with authorities working to piece together the sequence of events that led to this tragic incident.
Elizabeth City Spokeswoman Ruby Contreras conveyed that emergency responders quickly arrived at the scene and promptly transported the victim to Trinitas Hospital.
Despite their efforts, medical professionals at the hospital, unfortunately, pronounced the victim deceased.
The victim's identity and further details about the incident are being withheld pending notification of family members and the progress of the ongoing investigation.
