A Union County judge sentenced an Elizabeth man to nine years in state prison for a brutal stabbing attack that left the victim with serious bodily injuries back in January 2022.

Union County Prosecutor William A. Daniel made this announcement, emphasizing the commitment to justice.

The sentencing comes after Juan Abreu-Perez, the defendant, pled guilty to the charge of Aggravated Assault on August 14, appearing before Union County Superior Judge Daniel Roberts.

Judge Roberts, on Friday, handed down a nine-year prison term, requiring Abreu-Perez to serve at least 85% of the sentence before becoming eligible for parole.

The incident that led to this sentencing occurred on January 25, 2022, at approximately 7:35 p.m. Elizabeth Police Department patrol units responded to a distress call regarding a stabbing on South 5th Street.

Upon arriving at the scene, officers discovered the victim suffering from stab wounds inside her apartment.

Union County Assistant Prosecutor Cynthia Ritter, who handled the case, explained that a swift investigation identified Juan Abreu-Perez as the suspect, leading to his apprehension.

Union County Prosecutor Daniel commended the Elizabeth Police Department for their prompt and effective response, which swiftly led to Abreu-Perez's arrest. He also underscored the significance of this sentence, emphasizing the determination to hold individuals accountable for such egregious offenses.

This verdict seeks to provide reassurance to the victim's loved ones, and the broader community that such offenses will not be tolerated and all efforts will be expended to ensure justice is served.
