Mr. Silvano Chable, 54, of Irvington, has been sentenced to 12 months and one day in prison after unlawfully obtaining over $237,000 in Social Security benefits meant for his late brother.
The announcement was made today by U.S. Attorney Philip R. Sellinger.
Federal officials said Chable had previously admitted guilt before U.S. District Judge Susan D. Wigenton for a count of wire fraud, leading to today's verdict in Newark federal court.
The court documents reveal that Chable had secured Social Security benefits for his sibling in March 2000, following the latter's paralysis due to a vehicular accident.
The benefits began in July 2000 and continued even after the brother's passing in May 2001. Failing to inform the Social Security Administration about the death, Chable illicitly received monthly payments meant for his deceased brother, accumulating to $237,780 from May 2001 to November 2017.
Besides his imprisonment, Chable will undergo two years of supervised release and is mandated to reimburse the full stolen amount.
