A catastrophic house explosion occurred at 53 Banker Street in West Milford, leading to a significant emergency response shortly before 9:15 p.m.
Hackensack UASI units were quick to join forces with other UASI Metro Strike Team members to assist local emergency services. Upon arrival, one victim was still trapped under the debris.
Working alongside the West Milford Fire Department, UASI units helped rescue the final victim, adding to the five victims that West Milford FD had already removed before their arrival.
According to a preliminary investigation, a total of six people were injured in the incident. Four of the victims were transported to area hospitals for immediate treatment.
The one-story house pancaked due to the explosion, leaving victims trapped roughly 10 feet beneath the rubble.
Multiple local and state agencies, including EMS and police, were also present at the scene, aiding in the rescue operations.
The West Milford Police and Fire Department will provide additional details as the investigation into the cause of the explosion continues. It is believed that a gas leak is responsible for the explosion.
According to National Fire Protection Association statistics, gas leaks and explosions accounted for nearly 40 deaths annually from 2010 to 2019.
