Newark Police have issued arrest warrants for two men, Wilbert Dorcely, 33, and Jevon Bowman, 34, following a reported robbery on Sunday, August 13, 2023.
Police said Dorcely, who later emerged as one of the suspects, initially claimed to be the victim.
He reported that while walking near Noble Street and Frelinghuysen Avenue at around 7:30 p.m., he was confronted by a man who stole his backpack containing valuable video equipment.
The assailant allegedly brandished what appeared to be a firearm and fled south on Frelinghuysen.
The stolen goods included a high-end Helium 8K camera and lenses, with a total value of $23,000, alongside other recording tools and a Wells Fargo credit card.
However, during the course of their investigation, robbery detectives unearthed evidence suggesting that both Dorcely and Bowman had conspired to fake the crime.
As a result, Dorcely now faces charges for filing a fraudulent police report, while Bowman is wanted for perjury.
