James Hurt, a 47-year-old New York resident, confessed to his involvement in a conspiracy targeting Asian and Asian-American small business owners for a series of burglaries. U.S. Attorney Philip R. Sellinger unveiled this development today.
Court records reveal that between December 2, 2016, and March 20, 2019, Hurt collaborated with accomplices to break into the homes of specific Asian business proprietors residing in New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, and Delaware.
The goal was to steal large amounts of cash, precious jewelry, and other valuable items. Subsequently, the group moved the stolen goods across state lines, notably to New Jersey and Pennsylvania residences.
Hurt pleaded guilty in Newark federal court before U.S. District Judge Evelyn Padin on September 13, 2023.
The charge brought against him, conspiracy to commit interstate transportation of stolen property, could land him in prison for up to five years. Additionally, he faces a possible fine of $250,000 or double the money involved in the crime, whichever sum is higher.
Hurt's sentencing has been slated for February 20, 2023.
