The waves along the East Coast beaches carried an unexpected danger as strong rip currents proved perilous for several swimmers.

Ocean County officials said six individuals were caught in the powerful currents and had to be rescued, serving as a stark reminder of the ocean's unpredictable nature at Belmar Beach Sunday.

The incident unfolded around 6:15 p.m. near Ocean Avenue and Belmar Avenue. The dangerous rip tides caught swimmers off guard, quickly pulling them under the water.

Lifeguards and medical professionals sprang into action, performing CPR on one of the rescued swimmers.

Three of the victims were subsequently rushed to area hospitals for further medical attention.

Emergency medical services from Belmar, Wall, and Avon were called to transport the injured swimmers to the hospital.

The US Coast Guard joined local lifeguards on-site to assist in the rescues, further highlighting the severity of the situation.

As beachgoers continue to flock to New Jersey's shores, authorities emphasize the importance of being cautious and informed about the potential dangers of rip currents.
