The Essex County Prosecutor's Office has confirmed that they are en route to the scene of a person found dead in a parking lot of a Family Dollar in Newark.
Preliminary reports indicated that shortly after 6 a.m., police were dispatched to 131 Clinton Avenue to investigate reports of an unconscious person.
Police arrived and requested assistance from the Newark Major Crimes unit after they found an unresponsive person lying in close proximity to the dumpsters.
The victim was pronounced dead at the scene, but the manner of their death has not been disclosed at this time.
Several garbage trucks were observed packed outside the crime scene tap -on Clinton Avenue- but it's unclear if the drivers were involved in the investigation.
Authorities are trying to determine if the deceased was struck by a vehicle that fled the scene or by one of the garbage trucks.
The investigation is active and ongoing.
