My friends, family, and residents in the Newark and North Jersey region should prepare for stormy weather later today as showers and thunderstorms are likely to develop, mainly after 5 pm.
According to meteorologists from the National Weather Service, the humidity stands at 64%, creating an atmosphere conducive to heavy rainfall and potential flooding.
The National Weather Service has issued a flood advisory for the entire region due to the saturated atmosphere.
The day will start with mostly cloudy skies, but as the afternoon progresses, the chances of showers and thunderstorms will increase. With a high temperature near 87 degrees, it will be a warm and humid day, adding to the atmospheric instability.
The wind will initially blow from the northwest at 5 to 8 mph, but it will shift to the south in the afternoon, reaching speeds of up to 13 mph.
NWS meteorologists are warning of the possibility of heavy rain during these storms, with new rainfall amounts between a tenth and a quarter of an inch expected. However, in areas where thunderstorms develop, higher rainfall amounts are possible.
This significant rainfall, coupled with the already saturated ground, raises concerns for potential flooding in low-lying areas, especially in the Wilson Avenue and Avenue L section of Newark's Ironbound section.
The town of Harrison (Hudson County) has already experienced a brief but intense rainfall around 4:40 a.m. this morning.
