Linden Police arrested Mr. Tijohn Cato, 30, and Ms. Samiya Medina, 34, of Newark after they were stopped while driving in a stolen car.
According to Linden Police, just after 8:00 p.m. on Thursday, July 6, Officers were alerted that the stolen vehicle was traveling south on Route 1.
Officers located the car near South Stiles Street and attempted to stop it.
Police say the car continued driving south on Route 1 until it suddenly came to a stop in the left turn lane at Avenue C.
Medina and Cato were ordered from the vehicle and taken into custody. A subsequent investigation led to the recovery of a handgun that was later confirmed to be stolen.
Police charged the pair with second-degree unlawful possession of a handgun and third-degree receiving stolen property.
Medina was released on a summons pending a scheduled appearance in Superior Court.
Cato was additionally charged with fourth-degree certain person not to possess a handgun. He was remanded to the Union County Jail pending a scheduled appearance in Superior Court.
These criminal charges are mere accusations. Every defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law.
