Newark – National Crime Victims’ Rights Week, the tradition of recognizing crime victims and those who serve them, has been designated by the President Of The United States as April 19 to 25.
The Essex County Prosecutor’s Office will be joining with other agencies across New Jersey to celebrate the work done on behalf of victims and will be hosting its own program next month.
“Engaging Communities, Empowering Victims,’’ is the national theme this year. The week long observance captures the spirit and resolve needed to realize our common goal of reaching each crime victim who is in need of hope and help and expand their options for services.
“Assisting crime victims is part of our core mission. Services and outreach, when delivered with professionalism, knowledge and empathy become a vital component of victim justice,’’ said Acting Essex County Prosecutor Carolyn A. Murray.
Yesterday, Assistant Prosecutor Michele Miller was among those honored by Attorney General John J. Hoffman during National Crime Victims’ Rights Week. Miller received the Gladiator Award for her outstanding work on behalf of victims. Miller recently successfully prosecuted a double murder case. During her 14 years with the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office she has earned a reputation as a passionate and tireless advocate for victims.
On Friday, May 29th, the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office and the Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office, through their Offices of Victim-Witness-Advocacy, are planning a public seminar to assist county residents who have fallen victim to cyber crime, especially those abused, threatened, harassed, or exploited in this manner as a result of intimate partner violence.
The emerging risks associated with digital technology, cyber-spying and stalking, social networking and other forms of electronic communications and its impact on personal safety and criminal investigations are the topics on the day’s agenda. The half-day seminar will be held at the Leroy Smith Public Safety Building located at 50 West Market Street, 14th Floor in Newark.
Registration will begin at 8:30 with the program beginning promptly 9:00am. The goal of this event is to increase community awareness of cyber-security issues.
